I love these last languorous days of Summer especially when the weather breaks as it’s done this week. From stifling to refreshing, we crammed a quick beach trip in. Luxuriously sleeping until 9am. Not Mark but me and the kids. The cicadas are winding their cacophony down giving over to the subtle whispers of the crickets accompanying the whispering leaves in the wind.
I got up and made my coffee and took it outside on the back porch. On Instagram, I intentionally connected with everyone who reacted to my very last story post as I watched the hummingbirds swoop and chirp around the feeder and the tree above me. I listened to the distant shrieks of the osprey and the twitter of the female cardinal. Then a strange chitter from a baby wren and the cooing of the mourning dove landing in my yard.
It’s all so yummy, like I can let go of the breath I’ve been holding since it’s been hot. I can emerge from an inside cocoon and reconnect with the world around me. And soon, with children back at school, I’ll be planning what’s next for me.
But not yet. August needs to give me a few more gifts of friends and fun before she gives it up.
