We make jokes about the encroaching capitalistic trend to put up Christmas displays before Thanksgiving. We say, “And soon they’ll be putting them up before Halloween, Ha ha ha ha.” And then it happened. Although Thanksgiving came late this year, I still can’t get with just throwing up the tree on Black Friday. And here’s why.
I have only a single month’s tolerance for those everlovin’ Christmas decorations. So, if I were to put them up the day after Thanksgiving, I’d be mighty sick of them by New Year’s Day. And New Year’s day is a ‘laze around and contemplate your future’ kinda day, not a create chaos and become exhausted kinda day.
I need emotional foreplay to “be in the mood” for Christmas because I’m a creative. For me, Christmas needs some teasing out by creative observance and acts of generosity and kindness.
Forever in pursuit of pleasure and joy, I need all my senses to be happily engaged with smell and sight and sound and texture. We are fetching our fresh pine tree this weekend and decorating with fresh greens. I’m always searching for the right candle scents. Going to buy myself a Red Current Votivo Candle because I love it. Each year I endeavor to recreate my home space in ways that entertain me.
My thought is whether I like it or not, I’m The Event Planner for the holidays. I might as well do this in a way that feels aligned with my values, in a way that makes me happiest. And if all those people popping up their decorated umbrella Christmas trees are in alignment with their joys, then who am I to stop them?
Just don’t judge me because Y’all moved the finish line.
