Nest Feathers
December 2017 in Pictures
Christmas is a force to be reckoned with. It rolls up on you like some sort of stealth vehicle running on joyful intentions with wicked time constraints. Here’s my thus far pictures to prove that we’re moving right along through the season. And my story is that this Christmas, I was more proactive than ever before so that I can be more present when those wrapped presents are being torn asunder. Enjoy your Holiday Happenings wherever and whoever you...

It was recently brought to my attention that I had never posted the “redecorate the dining room” post. This was a May ’17 project I set myself to completing before hosting a dinner party, taking our green dining room and transforming it into a pink dining room. And I was truly pleased with myself and the results. This room reno cost a little over $200 including awesome rug, paint, and curtains. And is a monument to decorating minimalism and intuition. At least five years ago, I decided to paint my dining room Chartreuse green. I thought...

I was a lunch guest of a woman whom I liked her and admired for starting her own Interior design business. I always thought interior decorating was one of those professions I’d missed my calling for. And she was a liberal thinker, funny, and kind. Within her lovely home, there was a dining room set that was funky and chunky but dark. And when I suggested she just go ahead and paint it, she said “Oh no, my husband wouldn’t approve of that.” They’d bought it together at an expensive local antiques dealer’s you see. He...

My daily prayer is for a shift. Please let my mind shift to see me and my world and my potential differently today. To value what I have and what I know with respect and reverence. I leave the house hoping to break my “same brain”. And I do for a little while driving or shopping. And then I return home and I feel the inevitable slip back into my rut. In the light of the upcoming birthday party and having guests over, I am doing some home renovations. Throw a party and you’ll make progress. My hallway is getting a long overdue facelift....

I notice that sometimes there are items that will sit on my to-do list for an uncomfortably long time, taunting me with their incompletion. The reasons why they are not being accomplished had evaded me. But they linger like a pain deep in my hip saying there’s something worth an x-ray going on in there. And this hallway renovation had become “one of those things”. I recognized the hold up sometime ago when I wrote about the stalled renovations in this post titled Weird Spaces and a Plan and what I realized it meant in the bigger...

Oh the inferences I had trying to film this video! I had every intention of filming it way before the holiday was over. But then the kids were home. And then it was overcast. And then winter hit and it was overcast all the time. I picked the whole house up one day and was just about to film and then everybody came home. Here’s the thing, I’ve got a family and a life. I like to separate them and sometimes they can’t be. So here’s the crunchy Christmas House Tour 2017 with me studdering and stumbling and it’s OK....

I feel “off” if I don’t try to redecorate my mantel spaces, bar top, and/or shelves every so often. I’m especially compelled to make a total difference redecorating for Summer and for Winter. It’s a “Thing”. This year, I happily entertained the achievement of some of this activity both for Halloween here and now for Fall. So before it gets too late and you need Christmas decorations, I thought I’d show you what my redecorating efforts got me. I was feeling the copper, white, and wood combination. And yes, I have a lot...

I almost didn’t do it. I thought about the effort it smacked of and the time it would take to go into the attic and drag everything out and down. And then I thought about how happy their little faces would be seeing Halloween explode in the house miraculously. And so I decorated! No plan, never enough time to make it “perfect” but still I did it. It’s the right thing to do. Fiona was thrilled. She ran around saying the word “cute” a lot in that affected girl way we apparently do when we’re shopping. They fought over the...

The beginning of the Holiday season was rather busy. I was offered an opportunity to flex my floral design wings this year and I took it. A chance to make multiple Christmas floral design pieces and decorate a Christmas tree for a house on a charity house tour. I was asked to do it so I couldn’t say no. Starting in November. I designed and shopped for every room specifically according to the dimensions of the space. I designed with silk florals, feathers, twigs, and ribbons, as well as respruced a few things my client had. I took two...

My front hallway has been in a state of disrepair and flux for many many years now. I had done some funky “looks like leather but it’s made out of paper bags” treatment in the area below the chair rail (known as the dado) but I’d ripped that off. And an idea to put up bas relief type joint compound diamonds around the top of the room has now left me wishing I hadn’t. Because those are going to have to be sanded off. Lots of dust. I have been planning a remodel and these pictures sprinkled throughout are my inspirational...
