Oh Universe, What Would You Have Me Do?

We mistrust ourselves so much, we have to hand much of our decision making over to another power. We create elaborate ways to make decisions. Drop a divining line down and see which way it swings to decide (dowsing pendulum). Pick your arm up and drop it to see if you should eat it (applied kinesiology). Because it’s awfully hard admitting that you have no faith in your own decisions and easier to give it over to something else. The exception being God. But most of us are faithless and frenetic.

The Drowning man story is the best story ever which humorlessly depicts how our lack of sight and faith keeps us from seeing the divine signs sent to us.

A fellow was stuck on his rooftop in a flood. He was praying to God for help.

Soon a man in a rowboat came by and the fellow shouted to the man on the roof, “Jump in, I can save you.”

The stranded fellow shouted back, “No, it’s OK, I’m praying to God and he is going to save me.”

So the rowboat went on.

Then a motorboat came by. “The fellow in the motorboat shouted, “Jump in, I can save you.”

To this the stranded man said, “No thanks, I’m praying to God and he is going to save me. I have faith.”

So the motorboat went on.

Then a helicopter came by and the pilot shouted down, “Grab this rope and I will lift you to safety.”

To this the stranded man again replied, “No thanks, I’m praying to God and he is going to save me. I have faith.”

So the helicopter reluctantly flew away.

Soon the water rose above the rooftop and the man drowned. He went to Heaven. He finally got his chance to discuss this whole situation with God, at which point he exclaimed, “I had faith in you but you didn’t save me, you let me drown. I don’t understand why!”

To this God replied, “I sent you a rowboat and a motorboat and a helicopter, what more did you expect?”

We are given so much and yet our brains don’t see what we’ve got but rather focus on what we don’t have.

Meditation and yoga are ways to reach our larger calmer parental minds, the voices we could trust to make decisions for us. But these processes are not a “one time and done” kinda thing. They require discipline and time and pain. Modern Americans have no time for any of these. And in essence, were not really worth it.Oh Universe, What Would You Have Me Do?

The beautiful thing about being young is that you are told what to do. You resent every little syllable you had to obey but when you find yourself without the direction, you may end up asking the Universe what it may want of you? And it may be super hard to find that first answer. But that is where I am right now.

Faith or Trust :Which Sideline are You Standing on

Faith and fear are the two motivating forces which shade our daily decisions. We always have the opportunity to choose how we perceive our reality and thus our resulting moods even when we don’t realize this. We are always deciding if we need to fear the situation or let it be OK whatever happens. We think we can control more than we do but, barring unseen tragedies and disasters, it’s only up to us to decide if our now is good or bad. If we choose to see good, we probably trust our surroundings and ourselves. If we feel fear, we don’t.

I had no real model for faith growing up. My parents we atheists and I claimed agnosticism as my chosen faith model although I was open to possibilities. Then, as I aged, I suddenly decided it was unwise to not believe in the miracles of the Universe and I opened up to the concept of a force greater than myself as a way to make sense of everything and experience awe.

But I found that not only did I have Faith issues, I had trust issues too. My family hadn’t been close knit and I had a hard time creating intimate trustworthy relationships with others as well as myself. Our church’s pastor offered that faith is a three legged stool we are seated on.

One leg of the stool is our trust in ourselves. Do we believe we are reliable to take care of that which needs doing? Do we believe we are capable of doing the hard things? The moment we can’t rely on just ourselves, we turn elsewhere. I believe strongly in or need to develop trust to battle fear and anxiety, I wrote a piece titled Seven Methods to Help Develop Self-Trust.

The second and third legs on our grounding stool are our community and our higher power. When one fail us, we have the others to fall back on. And I guess we trust that all of them are there for us to use.

The only way to move forward in life is to believe that the your fears are beatable and surmountable. To have the belief that life is for you and not against you. That if you were to ask for assistance or help in several ways, you would be offered it. That in the end you mean something to the world enough to tell the fear thoughts to suck it and go for the gusto that faith gives you.

I believe we are standing on one side of this line or the other. And I believe I just crossed over into Faith.

On Gratitude : Part Two

I was talking on the phone with my husband. He said, “Did you call the gas company?” at the exact same time the gas company truck was driving by my window at 40 miles per hour. I laughed, told him what had just happened, and wondered out loud how often the Universe is trying to let you know stuff that you just aren’t paying attention enough to understand.

Gratitude isn’t just for the now,

it’s for all the stuff that didn’t but could have happened.

I can tell you I’m profoundly grateful for the support I received from my community when the chips were down a couple of weeks ago and my blog blew up. For Danielle fixing my site when it got eaten by a Viagra ad. For my friends showing up to celebrate my birthday. For all the birthday wishes I received from all the people online and off! And for my children for being sweet and healthy and creative.

But I’m also grateful for just being here. For not having been taken out of this beautiful world by any of the people I made bad choices with or by the drugs I took. Grateful I am healing from my traumatic childhood and am lucky enough to have a therapist who gets me. For the food in my fridge all of which I didn’t grow or pay for. And for the ability to post words I want to say unedited out into the inter-webs.

Thank you life.

How to Knock Fear off Your Brain Hill

If you’ve read anything on self-development and personal growth, you know that fear figures prominently in messing your life goals up. Fear takes on many shapes and feelings like anxiety and perfection and is mostly to blame for everything that messes with your life’s satisfaction. Fear knows everything you know and will ask you to not even acknowledge these truths but there it sits, king of your brain hill.

Usually the first suggested exercises to work through and conquer your fears will be to name them. A series of questions will ask you to delve deep and be honest about what you are most afraid of. If your fear protection barrier is really strong, you won’t be able to see the answer to these questions. Your fear is smarter than this. It’ll be too much trouble or you’ll just give the answer you think they are asking for. My thought is that, yes, we need to acknowledge we have fear. Whether we have fear of success or fear of failure is of no true matter, what we really need to know is what we have in our artillery to fight it. Because, to get on to the things we want, there has to be a battle. The more we succumb to our fears and stay in paralysis, the more disgusted we feel with ourselves. In order to feel proud again, we must move forward out of the fear paralysis and into the “Aha, so that’s who I really am” realm. Get to know the us that fear is blocking us from seeing.

I think knowing you have what it takes when the time comes to fight through the fear is tantamount. You need to acknowledge your own intelligence and what you’ve accomplished earlier in times of adversity. You need to know that your are smart and resourceful and that you have a good network of support ready to aid and cheer you on. Your community and your resources are yours to be proud of. And most of all, I think we need to believe that the Universe is For Us and not Against Us . People want you to succeed. Or perhaps the people who matter want you to succeed. You are only required to give yourself permission beyond the initial fear to find out how far your dream can progress. And then you’ll know what it’s like to say “I can”.

Universal Message

The universe gave me a message this week that I mattered. Not intimidating like God speaking to me, but just a general nudge from my more intimate universe that I am rocking my life in good ways.

We matter. You’ve heard this and blown this off a million times. But those who grab it and put it inside themselves, those people are the one who feel entitled to ask for the changes the world needs to see.

It’s a matter of allowing, coercing, and getting ourselves to see how we matter and agree with the rest of the world on this matter of us mattering. This week this was how I was validated.universal message on Shalavee.com
